Reading Our staff and children are passionate about reading, and we have a wide genre of books to read in our library and classrooms. We provide daily opportunities for children to read as a whole class or as an individual, focussing on fluency, stamina and comprehension skills. Children in Key Stage One are given a reading book that is linked to their relevant phonic phase, which they change at least twice a week. They also take home a library book, to build their enthusiasm for reading and access different types of texts. Children in Key Stage Two are guided to choose a more lengthy book from their classroom library which is of the appropriate challenge as well as one of interest from the school library. Each class has a volunteer reader to help support extra reading sessions throughout the week. Writing Our aim is to provide opportunities for our children to express themselves with daily writing practise. Children build up to produce an excellent piece of written independent work for a specific audience, through the following sequence; sentence work, planning, drafting, editing and publishing. We carefully choose texts as a stimulus to ensure our children are exposed to high quality vocabulary-rich texts with a wide range of writing genres. We provide support and challenge for each child and share excellent examples to inspire and help emulate styles. At each stage of the writing process, we endeavour to provide the children with the opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge that will allow them to express themselves effectively and creatively through spoken and written language. |
